Battery Energy Storage Systems in Kenya
LiFePO4 battery banks sized around the loads you actually need to keep running — for home backup, commercial peak shaving, or remote and mini-grid power, on their own or paired with solar.
Backup power vs. peak shaving — different jobs, different sizing
Backup power
Keeps selected critical loads (lighting, fridges, servers, security systems) running through a grid outage. Sized around how long an outage typically lasts and exactly which loads must stay on — not the whole building's load.
Peak shaving
For commercial/industrial sites on demand-based tariffs — the battery discharges during the site's highest-demand periods to flatten the peak, reducing demand charges. Sized around the site's actual demand profile, not backup duration.
A system can be sized for both, but the design starts from which job matters more for your site — conflating the two usually means oversizing for one and undersizing for the other.
Why LiFePO4
Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) is the standard chemistry for stationary home and commercial storage, chosen over other lithium chemistries specifically for thermal stability — it's significantly more resistant to thermal runaway, which matters for a battery bank that sits indoors or in an enclosure for years rather than a device you're actively monitoring like a phone or laptop. It also handles a high cycle count well, which matters for a system charging and discharging daily rather than occasionally.
Frequently asked questions
Can battery storage work with an existing solar system?
Often yes — it depends on whether your existing inverter supports battery retrofit, or whether a hybrid inverter needs to be added alongside it. This gets confirmed at the design stage, not guessed from the panel spec alone.
What's the difference between backup storage and peak shaving?
See "Backup power vs. peak shaving" above — they're sized around different things (outage duration for critical loads vs. demand-charge reduction) and a design should start from which one matters most for your site.
How is a battery bank sized?
From the loads you actually need to keep running (for backup) or your site's demand profile (for peak shaving) — plus how long you need that covered. Both require a real usage assessment, not a flat per-kW guess.
Is LiFePO4 safe for home use?
Yes — it's the standard chemistry for stationary home storage specifically because of its thermal stability margin compared to other lithium chemistries. See "Why LiFePO4" above.
Do you provide monitoring for battery systems?
Ongoing monitoring and maintenance is part of how we work — specific terms are confirmed at the quote stage for your site's system.
